A Guide to EuroMillions History and Play Information

buy euromillions tickets onlineThe EuroMillions is a transnational lottery game available throughout various European countries. It started back on February 7, 2004 with the first drawing held on the 13th of February 2004 in Paris. The game started out with only a few participating countries namely France, Spain, and the UK. Later on, Belgium, Austria, Luxembourg, Ireland, Switzerland, and Portugal decided to take part for the October 8, 2004 drawing. Drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at approximately 20:45 in Paris.

History of the EuroMillions

The EuroMillions started out in 1994 as the brainchild of the Francaise des Jeux. They have based their idea on the multi-state lottery games in the US which involves other European lotteries for one pan-European lottery game. However, it took almost a decade before the draw could become a reality mainly because of discussions, disagreements, and disputes between the original operators.

Oddly enough for a game that relies purely on luck, the organizers of the EuroMillions have decided to set their debut draw on the 13th of February 2004, which coincidentally fell on Friday. At first, the game was only available to players who are from Spain, France, and the UK. But later on, players from Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Portugal, Belgium, and Ireland were able to join in October the same year.

During the first year of the game, EuroMillions was able to gain massive success with several massive jackpots won one after another. Although massive jackpots were won during its first year of operation, it wasn’t until 2005 that the jackpot has reached €100 million.

Changes to the Game

In May 2011, the EuroMillions has experienced massive changes. First of all, the number of lucky stars players have to choose from increased from just 9 to 11. Through this change, even bigger jackpots and more rollovers are to be expected. Aside from that, a second weekly drawing has also been introduced. So instead of just having a draw every Friday night, a second weekly draw has been scheduled every Tuesday night. With this, players are given another chance to play, not to mention it has also doubled the rate at which jackpot prizes grow. Later on in September 2016, the number pool for Lucky Stars was increased to 12.

A few months after the introduction of new rules, the largest jackpot ever in the history of EuroMillions was won. In July 2011, the Weir couple from Glasgow, Scotland were able to take home a whooping £161 million jackpot after matching all five main numbers and two lucky stars.

How to Play EuroMillions

You can either choose to play EuroMillions online or directly from a local ticket retailer. But first, you need to buy EuroMillions tickets online or from a nearby ticket outlet. There are three main ways you can play the EuroMillions game. The first, and most common, is by choosing your own numbers. This is done by marking a playslip with your five selected main numbers along with two Lucky Star numbers. Second is by choosing the Quick Pick option. With a Quick Pick, your numbers will be randomly selected by the system. You can ask the ticket outlet directly for a Quick Pick, or mark the Quick Pick feature on your playslip.

The third, and probably the easiest, means is to play EuroMillions online. It follows the same mechanics as you would with a paper playslip. You could either:

  • Choose your five main numbers from a total number pool of 50, and two Lucky Stars from a number pool of 12.
  • Choose the Quick Pick button for random number selection.
  • Go to My Favourite numbers in order to choose from the list of your saved numbers.
  • Pick the My Last Ticket option in case you’ve already played before.

Once you have chosen your preferred option, select or deselect EuroMillions Plus and decide how many draws you want to play in. Afterwards, simply click the Play Now button. You always have the chance of checking and even changing your numbers before you make a purchase. If you’ve finally decided, simply click Play Now to be part of the upcoming draw. In the event you win, you will receive an email. You can also decide to receive an email for the draw results if you want to.

The EuroMillions Plus feature is drawn after the main EuroMillions draw and will cost you an additional €1 for every panel. With the EuroMillions Plus, you can have a chance of winning €500,000. You will notice your ticket printed with EUROMILLIONS PLUS YES by choosing this feature.

The UK Millionaire Maker

play euromillions onlineStarting November 2009, the UK Millionaire Maker has been added into the EuroMillions drawings. Initially, a lucky player is selected every week and will receive a guaranteed one million prize. However, in September 2016 the number has been increased into 2 lucky players being chosen per draw, meaning 4 lucky winners are selected every week.

Based on the EuroMillions website, the odds of winning the UK Millionaire Maker game every Tuesday are 1 in 1,900,000 although it could gradually decrease due to rollovers. During Friday, the odds are 1 in 2,950,000 but will also decrease due to rollovers. The odds of winning the game will depend on the total number of tickets sold, meaning the odds could vary greatly.

All prizes, along with the jackpot, are tax-free and will be paid in lump sum payment. A few exception are Spain, Switzerland, and Portugal.
